Part P and Electrical Safety When Carrying Out Electrical Installation Work in Dwellings
Part P and Electrical Safety when carrying out electrical installation work in dwellings
From the 1st of January 2005 the design, installation, inspection, testing, and certification of electrical installations in dwellings will be controlled under The Building Regulations. Part P (electrical safety) of The Building Regulations places legal requirements on fixed electrical installations in dwellings and associated areas so that:
Reasonable provision is made in the design, installation, inspection and testing of electrical installations in order to protect persons from fire or injury Sufficient information shall be provided so that persons wishing to use an electrical installation can do so with reasonable safety
Part P applies mainly to dwelling houses and flats, but also includes controlled electrical works being undertaken in gardens e.g. pond pumps and outbuildings such as, sheds, garages and greenhouses.
Small jobs such as fitting a new socket-outlet or a light switch on an existing circuit will not need to be notified to Building Control. However, there are some exceptions where work is being carried out in high-risk areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
All work involving the addition of a new electrical circuit to a dwelling, or electrical work in kitchens, bathrooms and other 'special' locations (see Table 2) will need to be either notified to Building Control or carried out by a 'competent person', registered with a 'Part P Self- Certifying Scheme'.
Anyone wishing to carry out controlled electrical work has two options to ensure they comply with the Building Regulations www.domlec.co.uk/part_p.htmlPart P.
1) Use an electrician/installer who is registered with a 'Competent Person's Scheme' in which case no Building Regulation application will be required for the work.
2) Submit a Building Regulation application to the Council (A Building Notice is the most appropriate form of application where the work is Erectile Dysfunction for controlled electrical installations)
Having trained to become an electrician over 20 years ago I have seen all the training methods, good and bad. I now run Domlec, an electricians home study training company who specialize in www.domlec.co.uk/part_p.htmlPart P self study Electricians Courses
